WHile having tests done to establish his cancer's progress, Walt gets a glimpse of his lungs on the computer image, with a large spot on one. This drives his actions for the rest of the episode.

WHile talking with Saul, Walt realizes he won;t be leaving his family much if he dies soon.

Walt uses his mother as a lie for not spending the weekend with Skyler, since he says he;d like to see her. He's pulling his mother into his lie now, even if only tangentially. The thing is, Walt is still technically isolating himself from Skyler for family's sake, only instead of the mother visit, he's actually cooking meth for his family's sake

Cut from SKyler and Walt in bed, to Jane and Jesse in bed. This indicates that there might be problems with their relationship sooner, rather than later.

Walt is dismissive of the idea that Jesse could have plans. He acts like Jesse couldn't possibly have a significant life outside of him.

Jesse does have a choice. Walt has no choice, if he wants to leave his family money, but Jesse could do just fine cooking less or later. Walt is tying Jesse to him, and treating Jesse like just an extension of himself.

This was intended to be a cheap episode with a compact cast/taking place in only one area, but all the desolate outdoors shots ended up costing so much to shoot that it's one of the more expensive ones

The outdoor shots are very important for establishing Jesse and Walt's seperation from the rest of the world.

"Is this a genetic thing with you, is it congenital, did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby" I mean, given my own pet theories, possibly yes to some of those. This "does something admittedly unimaginably stupid because it made sense at the time" thing is something I've had some experience with, particularly the ability to go "this will fix one problem" without thinking of other problems. Jesse would only have been focussed on "not losing the keys" so he wouldn't have been thinking of "don't drain the battery". Dumping all the water on the generator fire is a similar act of impulse.

I can't say Walt being upset at Jesse is unwarranted, but the personal attacks on Jesse's intelligence seem like a bit much.

In the course of their stranding in the desert, it comes out that methylamine doesn;t spoiler. Jesse now really knows he can't trust Walt, even as Walt demands Jesse trust him and prioritize him

the cuts between the sun and the work really get across a sense of time-passing and drudgery in the course of trickle-charging the battery, and then all their hard work was for nothing.

Jesse sees that Walt is coughing up blood, and realizes Walt's true motivations.

At this point, Walt is still capable of admitting wrongdoing. Jesse said he did everything for his family, and Walt says all he ever did was make them worry and lie to them. He's truly having all of his illusions stripped away by impending death.

Jesse decides to walk back to civilization. He'll act, no matter how ineffective or irrational that might be. Jesse is able to bring Walt out of his despair by appealing to Walt's intelligence. Despite what I said above, Walt is more effectively motivated by an appeal to his pride.

"what particular element comes to mind?" "Wire!" the worst part of this is how proud Jesse seems for getting the "right answer"

Jesse promises Walt's family will get their share. He's sympathetic to Walt's reasons.

And Walt finds out he's gone into remission, and excuses himself to go into the bathroom and lash out. For one, he doesn;t have an easy out from the meth business now. He's stuck with it until someone kills him in a much worse way. For another, now he has to face himself. He admitted it while out, that he;s been lying to his family and worrying them, and now he has to keep being the person who does that for the foreseeable future.
